Free Voip Calls

On more than one occasion I have come across the question: Which services offer free VoIP Calls?

It is a tricky question because one must come to realize that there are truly free SIP Based VoIP calls that are possible, and there are services offering free Calls to the PSTN network as a promotional offer, where the cost for the calls is subsidized by the company.

Having some time on my hands, while playing with TringMe's TringPhone ( www.tringme.com ), and a free VoXBasic account from VoXalot ( www.VoXalot.com ), I put together the following demonstration of the power of VoIP.

It should be neat for testing VoIP for those just getting started, but may also come in handy for those of you setting up ATAs who want to test that incoming calls are reaching you successfully. Of course, it is also handy for when you find yourself with Internet Access but no local SipBroker Access number, the setup below allows you access to the SipBroker network directly from the web.....

Placing Calls:

ENum Numbers (made possible by www.e164.org)

1. To see if a number has an ENum record and can be reached for free via ENum  search here: http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/enumLookup

2. To call an ENum number, enter the number in full international format: CountryCode-Number

SipBroker Destinations (made possible by www.SipBroker.com)

1. SipBroker allows calls to over 2000 VoIP networks and their users using a SipCode system (*xxx or *xxxx to identify each network). For the SipCode of each network see http://www.sipbroker.com/sipbroker/action/providerWhitePages

2. To call a SipBroker Destination, enter SipCode-Number (with a 0 instead of the *)

(eg. To call VoXalot user 123456, enter 0010-123456 rather than *010-123456)

(Note: If the SipBroker page lists a network with a red sign, it means that the network is not allowing incoming third party calls at the moment)

Toll Free Numbers (made possible by www.e164.org)

-Toll Free Numbers in US/Canada: 1-800, 1-888, 1-877, 1-866

-Toll Free Numbers in the UK: 44-800, 44-500, 44-808

-Toll Free Numbers  in Germany: 49-800

-Toll Free Numbers in the Netherlands: 31-800

Gizmo Backdoor Dialing (made possible by http://gizmo5.com/pc/backdoor/ )

1. See if a number is supported for Backdoor Dialing check at  http://gizmo5.com/pc/backdoor/

2. To call a supported number for Free via the Gizmo network dial 7- Ten digit US number

(Note: The system above is set up to add 0101 automatically, all you have to do is ensure the number is supported for backdoor dialing and preface it with 7)

PhoneGnome Users (made possible by www.phonegnome.com)

1. PhoneGnome allows all registered users to call each others actual phone numbers for free

2. To call the number of a PhoneGnome user dial 8-CountryCode-Number

(eg. if calling 1-416-xxx-xxxx, dial 8-1416xxxxxxx)

CallBack: Use Your Phone to place calls

1. Click on the Button below and enter the number where you want to be called

-The dialing rules above apply when entering your number

-eg. Enter a PhoneGnome user number as 8-CountryCode-Number

-eg. If you want to access the system via your VoIP account reachable by SipBroker, use the SipCode-Number format described above

2. When the system calls you back, you'll hear two notices:

-The first will announce that the call is being connected

-The second will announce in italian "Benvenuto s'ul LiberaIlVoip, digita il numero di telefono seguito d'al tasto canceleto", which translates "Welcome to LiberaIlVoip, enter the phone number followed by the # key"

3. Once the italian message has finished simply enter the number you wish to reach, use the dialing rules as described above once again (eg. to call 14162223333 via PhoneGnome enter 14162223333#) and don't forget the # at the end.

Disclaimer:

-This setup is for testing purposes only, and there is no guarantee of its continuance for the long-term.

-TringPhone limits all calls to about 10 minutes

- Given that a number of services have been combined there maybe limits on simultaneous calls, which may not allow you to use the Phone above at certain times.

- Use of this system for Prank calls or calls of an inappropriate nature is strongly discouraged and will not be tolerated
